Stablecoins Look Simple, But Beginners Should Understand the Risk Behind the Peg

A stablecoin is not “risk-free money.” It is crypto infrastructure with a promise.

Most beginners first meet stablecoins through tokens designed to track the value of a fiat currency, usually the U.S. dollar. The basic idea is simple: instead of watching the price swing like BTC or ETH, a stablecoin aims to stay close to $1.

But the word “stable” can be misleading.

Different stablecoins use different designs. Some are backed by cash-like reserves or short-term assets. Others use crypto collateral. Some past designs tried algorithmic mechanisms, and the market learned painfully that not every peg is equally strong.

DeFiLlama currently tracks stablecoin market cap, supply, peg data, and changes across major stablecoins. Its data shows USDT and USDC as the largest stablecoins by market cap, which explains why they dominate trading pairs, DeFi liquidity, and cross-platform settlement.

Stablecoins matter because they act like the “cash layer” of crypto.

Traders use them to move in and out of positions. DeFi users use them for lending, borrowing, and liquidity. Some people use them for faster transfers compared with traditional banking rails.

But beginners should still ask:

Who issues it?

What backs it?

Can it be redeemed?

Has it ever lost its peg?

Which chain is it on?

Simple concept, serious risk management.

What crypto concept should be explained next in plain English?
