Iran… When Religion Becomes a Political Cover and a Project of Chaos For decades, the Iranian regime has tried to market itself to the Muslim world as the “protector of Islam” and the “champion of the oppressed,” yet the reality on the ground tells a completely different story: every time Iran has intervened in an Arab state, it has brought destruction, division, militias, sectarianism, chaos, and bloodshed. Iran has never been known as a project of state-building, but rather as a project of state infiltration. It speaks of “Islamic unity” while working to tear apart Arab societies from within; it invests more in militias than in development, and supports chaos more than stability. Specifically in the Gulf, Iran has never ceased its political, security, and military blackmail—whether through threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, support for armed proxies, or campaigns of media and sectarian incitement—and then returns to raising slogans of “Islamic brotherhood” and “support for the Ummah,” as if slogans could conceal the truth. The problem is not with the Iranian people—peoples deserve respect—but with a regime that has built its project on expansion, political deception, buying time, procrastination, and exploiting religious sentiment to achieve purely geopolitical goals. One of the greatest mistakes made by some is confusing “nomenclature” with “reality.” Not everyone who raises an Islamic slogan represents Islam, and not everyone who includes the word “Islamic” in their name has an authentic Islamic project. Therefore, I believe the most accurate analogy for this contradiction is comparing the “Islamic Republic of Iran” to the term “sewage water”: Just as sewage water is not “healthy” merely because the word appears in its name, Iran is not “Islamic” merely because it raises religious slogans. True Islam does not rely on exporting chaos, funding militias, trading in causes, political deception, or using religion as a tool to deceive populations. Islam is a religion of justice, mercy, safety, stability, and the sanctity of life. Over the past decades, however, Iran’s project has been synonymous with war, destruction, and division wherever it has appeared. Today, many Arab peoples have become far more aware of this reality and no longer fall for flashy slogans or revolutionary rhetoric—because experience has proven that Iran excels in only one thing: managing chaos and prolonging crises. In contrast, Gulf countries—led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia—have demonstrated that they represent a project of stability, development, and political rationality, striving to protect the region from collapse despite every provocation and direct or indirect targeting. Today, the region does not need exhausted religious slogans; it needs projects of development, stability, respect for state sovereignty, and non-interference in others’ affairs. Those who attempt to use Islam as a political cover to advance expansionist ambitions harm Islam more than they serve it—no matter how many slogans they raise or how much they stir Muslim emotions.
