An entire community in the Lake Tahoe region is now urgently seeking a new power supplier after its electric utility announced it will lose nearly three-quarters of its electricity by May 2027. NV Energy, Nevada’s largest utility, has informed Liberty Utilities that it will end its wholesale power supply agreement. Liberty Utilities serves approximately 49,000 residents across the California-Nevada border. The decision means Liberty will lose about 75 percent of its current power supply, forcing local officials and residents to scramble for alternative sources. The move is driven by surging demand from data centers. These facilities already consume 22 percent of Nevada’s electricity generation, a share projected to rise to 35 percent by 2030 as AI infrastructure continues to expand rapidly. While NV Energy describes the change as a planned transition, the shift has raised serious concerns about higher electricity costs and the need for major new infrastructure investments. For thousands of families, the AI boom has now directly collided with everyday energy needs. This situation highlights the growing tension between the explosive power demands of artificial intelligence and the reliable electricity supply required by residential communities.
