Another crosschain protocol just got hit. Verus-Ethereum Bridge was exploited for around $12M, only days after the $10M THORChain hack. What makes this case ugly: the bridge did not fail on keys, signatures, or cryptography. It correctly verified signatures, Merkle proofs, and transaction hashes. It failed on the most important question: were the assets on the Verus side actually there before releasing funds from reserves? That mistake cost: • 1,625 ETH • 103 tBTC • 147k USDC Since the start of 2026, bridges remain the weakest point in crypto. Just 8 major incidents have already caused $328.6M in losses, with most of that coming from the KelpDAO / LayerZero disaster in April.
