Italy’s largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, increased its crypto holdings from $100 million to $235 million in Q1, making its first purchases of Ethereum and XRP while nearly liquidating its Solana position. This is not a tentative experiment by a small bank, but a deliberate allocation decision by one of Europe’s largest financial institutions. The details are telling: the bank increased its positions in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF and BlackRock’s IBIT, added exposure to Ethereum for the first time via BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust, and added $26 million in Grayscale XRP Trust ETF. It also established bullish options positions on IBIT, exited its Bitmine holding, and slashed its Solana stake from 260,000 shares down to just 2,817 shares. The signal is clear: institutions are actively selecting assets—not passively following trends. Ethereum’s staking yields and XRP’s regulatory clarity became key advantages, while Solana was sidelined. This strategy of increasing exposure to high-quality assets while reducing uncertain ones reflects a deeper institutional understanding of crypto assets than simple BTC buying alone. But risks remain: Intesa’s crypto holdings are primarily used for proprietary trading, meaning these positions could be rapidly adjusted in response to market volatility. If macro pressures persist—such as U.S. Treasury yields breaking 4.5% or SpaceX’s IPO drawing capital—such institutional positions could themselves become sources of selling pressure. Institutional entry is never a one-way bullish signal; it marks the beginning of a more complex market structure. $xrp #eth #sol #btc #defi
