Aba and Ima: The Flow of Wisdom into Life From the words of the Holy Zohar we learn that nothing exists in isolation. All creation emerges through pairing, through the union of what gives and what receives. חכמה (Chochmah – wisdom) is called Aba, the father; בינה (Binah – understanding) is called Ima, the mother. Together, they give rise to all that follows. פירוש נסתר / Hidden Meaning The union of חכמה and בינה is not merely intellectual; it is the channel through which the Divine will becomes reality. חכמה is the flash, the נקודה (nekudah – point), pure and undefined. בינה expands, develops, and gives form. Without בינה, חכמה remains hidden; without חכמה, בינה has nothing to build upon. Their joining produces זעיר אנפין and מלכות, the flow from above into the world below. This is the “river” of Eden, the continuous shefa that sustains existence. Thus, the Holy Name itself contains these levels, revealing that all life is structured through this harmony of giving and receiving. יישום מודרני / Modern Day Application A person often seeks inspiration but fails to act, or acts without clarity. The teaching is direct: wisdom must be developed into understanding. An idea alone is not enough; it must be nurtured, refined, and brought into action. When a person receives insight, he must sit with it, expand it, and translate it into reality. This is how חיים (chayim – life) flows properly—when inspiration and discipline work together. הרהור / Reflection A person should ask: do I allow my ideas to remain sparks, or do I build them into something real? The balance of Aba and Ima exists within every soul. When one honours both, life becomes aligned, and the flow of blessing is no longer blocked. משל / Parable A man received a rare seed from a king. He admired it, spoke of its beauty, and showed it to others—but never planted it. Another man took a simple seed, planted it, watered it, and tended it daily. In time, it became a great tree. The first had חכמה without בינה; the second united them and brought life into the world. תפלה / Prayer יהי רצון מלפניך אדני אלקינו שתזכנו לחבר חכמה ובינה בלבנו ולפעול את רצונך בשלמות ולהמשיך שפע וברכה לעולם May it be Your will, Adonai our G-D, that we merit to unite wisdom and understanding within our hearts, to act with completeness, and to draw down abundance and blessing into the world.
