Cathie Wood just called Ethereum "the backbone of the decentralized internet." That's not a new take for ARK Invest. But it's worth understanding what they actually mean by it. ARK's thesis on $ETH has three layers: First: Ethereum solves what they call "the problem of digital function." It's the infrastructure layer that lets developers deploy code, settle transactions, and build applications without a central authority controlling the rails. Second: it's the indispensable infrastructure for DeFi and decentralized applications. The same role TCP/IP played for the traditional internet, except with programmable money baked in from the start. Third: Wood frames ETH as an institutional-grade asset for financial services. Not a speculative token. A settlement layer for a new financial system. The number ARK has attached to this thesis: a $20 trillion market cap by 2032. For context, that's roughly 84x from where Ethereum sits today. Is it realistic? That depends entirely on whether DeFi, tokenized assets, and decentralized applications become mainstream financial infrastructure or stay a niche. The regulatory tailwinds are moving in the right direction. The Fed, OCC, and FDIC just greenlit tokenized securities on permissionless blockchains, and Ethereum was named explicitly. That's exactly the kind of institutional signal ARK's thesis has been waiting for. Whether Cathie is right is an open question. But the underlying bet is increasingly less crazy than it sounded five years ago: That the world's financial infrastructure eventually runs on programmable, decentralized rails.
