🚨⭐️ Seúl Police Arrest 80 Suspects for Illegally Activating Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Mode The Seoul Police revealed that suspects used overseas or self-made devices to disable Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature. This feature is only legally permitted on approximately 20% of Tesla vehicles sold in Korea. According to police, one suspect purchased an activation device from Europe, connected it to his Tesla vehicle, and used the autonomous driving function without authorization. The police added that this case once again highlights the dangers of using unauthorized devices. A police official stated, “Safety risks have been confirmed, including the possibility that Full Self-Driving (FSD) may fail to properly recognize driving conditions or operate contrary to the driver’s intent.” Another suspect, employed in the IT industry, is believed to have created an activation device using information obtained from GitHub, a developer code-sharing platform. Police reported that the suspects shared not only methods to unlock FSD but also techniques to avoid leaving activation records on the vehicles within online communities. Under the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Tesla vehicles manufactured in the U.S.—such as the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck—are exempt from Korea’s vehicle safety certification requirements and are therefore the only Tesla models legally eligible for FSD functionality. Models produced in China, such as the Model 3 and Model Y, have not met Korea’s safety standards. According to Cariyu DataLab, as of August, only 47,458 (20.7%) of the 229,311 Tesla vehicles on Korean roads are legally eligible to use FSD. In April, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport discovered cases of unauthorized FSD activation and requested a police investigation. The government considers such actions a violation of the Motor Vehicle Management Act, which prohibits unauthorized modification, installation, addition, or deletion of software that may affect vehicle safety. Violators may face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won (approximately $15,000). A police official stated, “We are closely cooperating with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Transport Safety Authority by seeking technical advice on structural changes to FSD functionality. We will continue actively investigating illegal activities that threaten road safety.”
