Smith wanted all of those fractions – Starting in 2017 he used AI to generate hundreds of thousands of songs under fake artist names like "Calm Baseball" and "Camel Edible." Nobody was meant to actually listen to them – He built a network of 1,040 bots across 52 cloud services running through a VPN from his house. The bots streamed his songs 661,440 times every single day – When streams on one song got too high and risked triggering fraud alerts he spread the plays across thousands more songs – By 2024 his bots had streamed his AI songs approximately 4 billion times. He had made over $10 million in royalties meant for real musicians – When the Mechanical Licensing Collective questioned how he was producing so much music so fast he told them his work was "clearly human-authored and not AI-generated" – The FBI arrested him in September 2024. He pleaded guilty and forfeited $8 million. Faces up to 60 years in prison 7 years, 4 billion streams, and $10 million stolen from musicians. Not one real person listened to a single song.
