Vitalik advocates formal verification

Vitalik Buterin warned AI could increase risks for crypto infrastructure. He argued Ethereum and other critical systems may need mathematically verified software to remain secure in an AI-driven future.

honestly, it's wild watching people explain away the capital rotation to CEXes and RWAs as just market cycle dynamics. they are missing the actual structural shift. open-source bytecode went from being DeFi's greatest strength to a fatal vulnerability. we have AI exploit agents spinning up to scan every smart contract on chain. it costs them literally $1.22 to reverse engineer a contract and hunt for vulnerabilities at scale. you can't justify chasing a 5% yield when you have to price in the permanent risk of autonomous bots reading your public code 24/7. capital is retreating to closed-source venues simply because they don't have public bytecode for AIs to rip apart. the risk model changed overnight. the risk premium on open-source finance is broken. until on-chain defense scales to match on-chain offense, the bleed isn't stopping.

We lived this over here on XRP. Formal verification plus AI changed our security landscape and weakened the case for onchain smart contracts. Shout out again to all the people doing the work on the XRPL 🙏

The $62,000 competitive audit of the Olas codebase with @code4rena is complete, and the full report is now published. It's great to see the wardens' work helping make the Olas codebase more robust. Read the report:

The economic asymmetry in smart contract security has always been brutal. An attacker spends an API call and a defender spends an engineer-week. Formal verification was always the theoretically correct answer. The reason it never scaled is that writing specifications by hand is slow and expensive. What @wgrieskamp built destroy this barrier. → Claude Code plugs into the Move Prover via MCP → AI generates the specifications → The prover checks them mathematically → Refinement loops until verification passes The tedious half gets automated while the rigorous half stays rigorous. @DecibelTrade is the right target to prove this works: order matching, margin logic, liquidation, funding rates. The full breakdown from @wgrieskamp is worth your time 👇🏻

All Firewall mitigations are now fully free on @vercel. Not just DDoS and system-level mitigations, but also any rule you configure. Vercel now absorbs the computational and network costs of any size of attack or traffic mitigation for your peace of mind. (And more to come!)

SR9 JUST VERIFIED A DEX ON $ICP — AND “TRUST ME BRO” DEFI SHOULD BE NERVOUS 🔥 This is proper $ICP hopium. SR9 has now claimed its first full DEX formal verification milestone. That matters because DeFi has been running for years on a weak trust model: Trust the devs. Trust the audit. Trust the multisig. Trust the bridge. Trust the frontend. Trust the upgrade admin. Trust that nobody missed the edge case. SR9 is pushing a different model: Specify the rules. Verify the behaviour. Produce artifacts. Make the claim checkable. That is a big shift. SR9 / Sector9 is built around Motoko and the Internet Computer stack. Its public materials describe a toolchain using: • Motoko-derived source • Viper / Silicon proof obligations • SMT / Z3 reasoning • TLA+ / TLC model checking • content-addressed artifacts • $ICP canister execution That is not normal crypto tooling. That is serious assurance infrastructure. And this is where $ICP by @DFINITY keeps being underestimated. Most chains are still fighting over: • TPS marketing • meme liquidity • bridge dependency • validator drama • fragmented apps • offchain frontends • centralized hosting • repeated exploit cycles $ICP is building in another direction: • full-stack onchain applications • canister smart contracts • Motoko-native development • reverse gas model • AI-assisted software creation • tamper-resistant execution • verification-oriented tooling • autonomous software that does not depend on one operator This is not just about one DEX. It is about where serious crypto infrastructure is heading. AI agents are coming. AI-written code is coming. Autonomous trading is coming. Machine-managed treasuries are coming. Protocol complexity is increasing. Attack surfaces are expanding. Audits alone will not scale. The next stage needs software where critical behaviour can be specified, checked, challenged, and checked again. That is why SR9 matters. Formal verification is not magic. It depends on the specification. It depends on the assumptions. It does not remove every real-world risk. It does not prove what was never specified. But it raises the standard. It moves crypto away from: “Believe us.” Toward: “Here is the artifact. Check it.” That is the grown-up version of DeFi. And once again, the serious infrastructure conversation points back to $ICP. Motoko. Canisters. Onchain compute. AI-assisted building. Formal methods. Verification artifacts. Autonomous economic rails. This is the part critics keep missing. $ICP is not just trying to be a faster chain. It is building the stack where software can be written, hosted, governed, verified, and executed onchain. That is not a small upgrade. That is the foundation for serious autonomous finance. SR9 is still early. Sector9 is still alpha. The full proof details still need to be reviewed by developers and independent verifiers. But the direction is obvious. The future will not run on “trust me bro” smart contracts. It will run on checkable claims, verifiable behaviour, stronger specifications, and infrastructure capable of carrying autonomous economic value. And $ICP is already in that conversation. Bullish is an understatement. #ICP #DFINITY #Motoko #SR9 #Sector9 #DeFi #FormalVerification #AI #Web3 #Onchain #Crypto #InternetComputer Contributions welcome: 1e672d038cebc619d93186418fa98f6499dbdb9cfdfac54f366c61a4a4ee4362

Vitalik is right that AI + formal verification could become one of the most important software-development patterns. Security in the blockchain industry can be significantly improved. But no, it is not as simple as “AI writes code, proofs verify it, therefore Ethereum becomes bug-proof.” A more realistic version is this. AI makes high-assurance engineering cheaper and more scalable. Teams still need to decide what must be true, model the system correctly, maintain the proofs, and design systems that are actually verifiable.

Anthropic is briefing the G20's Financial Stability Board on AI cyber vulnerabilities. The specific trigger: Claude Mythos exposed cyber vulnerabilities serious enough to land on the desk of systemic financial risk regulators. Why this matters for crypto specifically: Onchain systems are the highest-value targets for AI-assisted exploits. Immutable settlement, autonomous execution, real-time liquidity = Greater incentive to attack.
