Harvard Suffers Losses in Crypto Trading, Fully Exits ETH Position The latest 13F regulatory filing reveals that Harvard Management Company (HMC) is significantly reducing its exposure to crypto ETFs. Its BTC ETF holdings have been slashed from approximately 6.81 million shares to about 3.04 million shares—a reduction of roughly 3.77 million shares. The ETH ETF position was eliminated entirely: HMC previously held around 3.87 million shares of ETHA, valued at approximately $86.8 million, and now holds zero. Last quarter, Harvard held roughly 6.81 million shares of IBIT, with a quarter-end market value of about $440 million. In other words, Harvard did not gradually build its position at lower prices; instead, it accumulated heavily during BTC’s highs and then steadily reduced its stake as prices retreated. The situation with Ethereum-native exposure is even more awkward. Just last quarter, HMC initiated a position in ETHA—the BlackRock spot Ethereum ETF—with a quarter-end value of approximately $86 million. Yet in the latest filing, this ETH ETF position has been fully liquidated, as if Harvard had barely boarded the Ethereum train before being quickly schooled by the market. Strictly speaking, 13F filings only disclose end-of-quarter holdings and do not reveal individual trade prices, so exact losses cannot be precisely calculated. However, based on the magnitude of position changes and the prevailing price levels of BTC and ETH at the time, this trading activity was almost certainly poorly timed. This isn’t really about how much Harvard lost—it’s about shattering the myth of “smart money.” Many assume that elite universities entering the market signals confirmed trends, long-term institutional adoption, and value discovery. But the reality is that even the most prestigious institutions can buy at peaks, and even the smartest capital can misjudge timing. The losses themselves are unlikely to significantly impact Harvard’s overall portfolio, as this crypto exposure represented only a small fraction of its total assets. But it does prove one thing: in crypto trading, credentials, Ivy League names, and reputational光环 matter little. What truly matters is positioning, market cycles, and仓位 management.

Harvard endowment cuts crypto ETF holdings sharply in Q1 2026, while Abu Dhabi doubles down on crypto! Harvard cut its iShares Bitcoin Trust position by about 43% in Q1, down to ~3.04M IBIT shares worth around $117M. They also fully exited BlackRock’s spot $ETH ETF... On the other side, Abu Dhabi's @Mubadala raised its IBIT holdings to about 14.7M shares, around $566M, They've been adding every quarter since late 2024. Harvard has not commented on the trades, but the latest move could indicate: 1. Portfolio rebalancing 2. Liquidity demands tied to private-market capital calls, or 3. Tactical de-risking IBIT is no longer Harvard’s largest disclosed public-equity holding. Filings show TSMC, $GOOG, $MSFT, and $GLD now rank ahead of it.
