💵 Stablecoins and Tokenised Cash, T-Bills and Gold 📚 Day 2 of 7 | Digital Assets Series Guys, this is where digital assets meet "boring" money. Today we lean on the Bank of Ghana's own National Virtual Assets Education Manual 📘 🔹 First, the BoG definitions 🔸 Stablecoin: a virtual asset "designed to maintain a stable value relative to a specified asset, like the U.S. Dollar or gold (e.g., USDT, USDC)" (Manual Part 2 glossary) 🔸 Tokenisation: "converting rights to an asset into a digital token on a blockchain" (Part 2 glossary) 🔸 Asset-backed tokens: linked to real-world items, e.g. gold-backed or real estate tokens 🔸 eCedi is NOT a stablecoin: a CBDC is a direct liability of the central bank. stablecoin depends on a private issuer. 🔹 Stablecoins: digital dollars Circle says USDC is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars, backed by cash and cash-equivalents. Kenya's new stablecoin rules? We covered those already, scroll up 👆 🔹 Tokenised T-bills / money market funds 🔸 BlackRock's BUIDL: US "qualified purchasers" only, minimum 5 million USDC. Not for us small guys. 🔸 Franklin Templeton's BENJI: from $20, but aimed at US investors. 💡 What you own: fund shares recorded on a blockchain, not a T-bill directly. The token may move 24/7; cashing out still follows business days. 🔹 Tokenised gold PAXG: each token = 1 troy ounce of London-vaulted gold. Physical redemption needs at least 430 tokens, so for most people it's a price claim, not gold in hand. 🇬🇭 Ghana: who regulates what? BoG covers virtual asset providers doing payments, transfers or storing value; SEC covers assets classed as securities, like investment products or asset-backed tokens. Some firms may need both. SEC Ghana's sandbox list includes pilots for tokenising gold (Africoin), T-bills (GFX Brokers), bonds (One Africa Securities) and more, plus the Ghana Gold Board as gold custodian. A sandbox is a supervised test, NOT a licence. ⚠️ Watch out (straight from the manual) ⚠️ "There is no virtual asset that guarantees profit." Some may lose value completely. ⚠️ A licensed provider is expected to follow rules, "but licensing does not mean every product is safe or risk-free" ⚠️ Even licensed providers can face tech failures or cyber attacks. ⚠️ Any "stablecoin" paying high yield is taking risk somewhere ⚠️ Cedi remains sole legal tender (BoG FAQ) ✅ Takeaway checklist ✅ Who issues it, and where are the reserves? ✅ Can I redeem, and what's the minimum? ✅ Am I eligible (country, investor type)? ✅ Is the platform licensed, or only in the sandbox? ✅ Cedi → dollar → token: total cost? ✅ Test with a small amount first. 📞 Something smells off?
