understanding how higher timeframe candles form on lower timeframes is one of the most useful skills in trading every candle has a few possible outcomes: it can stay inside the previous range, break higher, or break lower once i have a directional bias, i use lower timeframes to understand how that candle is developing and look for entries before the higher timeframe candle closes a daily candle with a long lower wick, for example, tells you price traded lower before buyers pushed it back up learning to recognize these patterns as they develop gives you a much better understanding of price action and where to position

i've been thinking about the possibility that crypto topped before equities this cycle if the recent bounce is just a countertrend move and stocks are only now beginning a larger correction, crypto could still have another leg lower i'm not fully convinced that's the scenario we're heading into, but i think it's worth considering given how much AI and equities have driven risk appetite this cycle Bitcoin could also find its bottom before the broader equity market does, even if both continue selling off in the near term i'm keeping an open mind and watching how price reacts as these markets approach important levels

the way crypto trades around all-time highs has changed significantly since 2017 back then, buying new highs was one of my most reliable setups. by 2021, i started getting punished for trading those breakouts the same way markets began consolidating around previous highs, breaking out briefly, then reversing aggressively i've had to adapt by paying much closer attention to failed breakouts and how price reacts when it retests key levels with equities also showing signs of weakness, i'm watching the NASDAQ and S&P 500 closely a normal 10% correction in stocks could still create significant downside pressure for crypto

time is an underrated part of risk management when trading lower timeframes when i enter a trade expecting a sharp move, i want price to react relatively quickly if Bitcoin is sitting around my entry for too long without moving in the direction i expected, i start questioning the setup the advantage of trading lower timeframes is that you can recognize when something isn't working much earlier sometimes i'll exit a trade simply because it's taking too long to play out, even if my stop hasn't been hit price and time both matter when deciding whether a trade is still worth taking

i can be extremely bullish on a chart one week and completely bearish the next if price action invalidates my original thesis all-time high breakouts are a good example. they used to be some of the easiest trades in crypto, especially back in 2017 now failed breakouts can lead to aggressive sell-offs as everyone rushes to exit the same trade i think a lot of traders struggle with accepting that the market has changed direction, and by the time they do, a significant part of the move has already happened

i approach most trades with two types of setups: entering at key support or resistance levels, or positioning for a breakout or breakdown for shorts, i'm looking to enter near resistance with a clear stop above, or trade a breakdown with invalidation above the previous range for longs, the same logic applies in reverse the important part is understanding how different timeframes connect candles are fractal, so when the higher timeframe doesn't give me a clear entry, i move down to lower timeframes to find a better setup and manage risk more precisely

avatar

when i'm trading lower timeframes, i pay a lot of attention to how far price moves in a short period a 2-3% drop in 15 minutes often creates conditions for a temporary bounce or consolidation as traders take profits and forced selling gets absorbed even when the broader trend is bearish, price rarely moves in a straight line i use these periods of consolidation to identify better entries around the top of the range, while watching levels like Monday's low and the previous day's low for confirmation understanding how price reacts after a sharp move is just as important as identifying the direction of the trend

some of the hardest trades to execute are the ones you planned weeks in advance it's easy to look at a chart and identify levels where you'd want to buy, but when price actually gets there after days of selling, your conviction gets tested that's why i like setting alerts and marking important levels before the market reaches them $ZEC around $750 is one area i'm watching. it's a significant historical level, although getting there would likely require a much deeper market correction doing the work beforehand helps me stay prepared when volatility picks up
