Apple Is Testing Chinese Memory Chips as the AI Boom Creates a Supply Squeeze

Apple is looking toward China for something smartphones and computers increasingly can't get enough of: memory.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has begun testing DRAM chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) for potential use in iPhones and MacBooks, particularly products destined for the Chinese market. Any broader arrangement faces U.S. export-control restrictions and would require Apple to navigate significant political sensitivity.

The timing is important.

Artificial-intelligence companies are consuming enormous quantities of memory, tightening the global DRAM market and pushing prices higher. Apple has already attributed some product price increases to rising memory costs.

CXMT is becoming a serious player in that market. The company captured about 7% of global DRAM revenue share according to Counterpoint data cited by the Journal, while its second-quarter revenue was reportedly more than eight times its level a year earlier.

But Apple isn't simply getting access to a cheap alternative.

CXMT's production is already heavily constrained, with the company prioritizing Chinese technology customers. Its technology also remains behind Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron in several areas.

The bigger story is therefore supply-chain diversification. For Apple, CXMT could provide another source of memory during an AI-driven shortage. For China, Apple's interest validates the progress of a domestic semiconductor industry that Beijing has spent years trying to build.

And for the global chip market, it shows how the AI boom is creating an unexpected consequence: **smartphone manufacturers are now competing with AI infrastructure for the same critical memory supply.**
