One of Crypto's Original Exchanges Is Shutting Down for Good

On July 23, BitMEX, the pioneer of the 100x leverage perpetual swap, announced on its official blog that it will be closing on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC.

The wind-down is taking place in steps. Registration for new accounts has ended. People will only be able to decrease their existing positions, not open new positions, starting Aug. 26.

Unfilled positions will be closed automatically once the deadline for the September 23rd is passed.

The BitMEX owner has explained that it has made the move "after a strategic assessment of the business and derivatives market as a whole," while rival exchanges have grown similar high-leverage offerings over the years.

BitMEX's statement is especially significant, as exchange failures are typically associated with security breaches or mismanagement, and the company has expressed its dedication to security over its entire history.

The closure seems to be an honest shut down and not a hack or insolvency action.

The bottom line for traders is very simple. It is not a wise idea to wait till the last days if you are waiting for your money or open positions to be fulfilled on a platform that is in the wind-up stage.

After the closing, custody fees become due for assets that have not been withdrawn, and forced position closures are few and far between, and generally not favorable for the trader.

In general, at least, it's a warning to anyone that a site with a long history and impeccable security can suddenly be shut down. Longevity does not equal permanence, and market share can decline but not be noticed until several years after the event has occurred.

Not financial advice.

Does a clean 11-year security record change how you'd feel about a platform shutting down, or does the closure itself make you rethink long-term platform loyalty? What's your take?
