What does this mean for crypto? The ECB is doing the same thing China did with e-CNY – building a central bank digital currency (CBDC) as an alternative to crypto, not its complement. The digital euro means full control, full transaction surveillance, zero anonymity. Every euro seen by the Eurosystem. This is exactly the opposite of why people turn to crypto. One gives control to the state. The other gives control to the user. By 2029, Europe will have the digital euro, stablecoins, and Bitcoin ETFs. The choice will be up to citizens.
