EDGEN is the native utility token of LayerEdge, a decentralized verification network designed to enhance Bitcoin's scalability and computational capabilities. By leveraging zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs and BitVM, LayerEdge enables off-chain computation verification while anchoring security on Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus. This approach allows multiple protocols to share verification costs, achieving up to a 95% reduction in Layer 1 settlement expenses and up to a 99% decrease in proof verification costs.

LayerEdge operates through a decentralized network of nodes that verify complex computations using zero-knowledge proofs. Users can participate by running light nodes via the edgenOS application, which transforms ordinary devices into verification nodes without requiring specialized hardware. These nodes contribute to the network's security and efficiency, and in return, operators earn EDGEN tokens as rewards.

LayerEdge was conceptualized to address the scalability limitations of the Bitcoin network. The project launched its public testnet in January 2025, allowing users to run light nodes and earn EDGE points through participation. These points were later converted into EDGEN tokens during the Token Generation Event (TGE) scheduled for May 31, 2025 . The initiative attracted early support from investors such as Blockchain Founders Fund and Founderheads.

EDGEN serves multiple purposes within the LayerEdge ecosystem:

Transaction Fees: Used to pay for verification and settlement services on the network.

The total supply of EDGEN tokens is capped at 1 billion, distributed as follows:

Community & Airdrop: 46% (15% for airdrops, 31% for ongoing rewards).

Ecosystem Grants: 18%.

Core Contributors: 15% (subject to a 36-month linear vesting schedule).

Investors: 14% (18-month cliff followed by linear vesting).

Treasury Reserve: 7% .
