Metaplanet explores BTC-backed credit
Metaplanet, JPYC, and Progmat study Bitcoin-backed digital credit products for Japan’s bond market. No product launch confirmed yet.

Japanese companies are turning to Bitcoin and XRP to hedge against yen weakness! The crypto broker SBI VC Trade reports a noticeable shift in the Japanese market, with an increasing number of companies directly adding BTC and XRP to their balance sheets. The reason: The ongoing depreciation of the Japanese yen is driving businesses to seek more stable alternatives for their corporate reserves. This flight into crypto is also reflected among retail investors—the number of registered accounts on VCTRADE and BITPOINT has already surpassed two million and is on track to double. What this means: Cryptocurrencies are rapidly establishing themselves in Japan as recognized corporate assets. The trend shows that digital assets are increasingly taking on the traditional role of inflation hedges against fiat currency depreciation in today’s macroeconomic environment.

🇯🇵 Metaplanet has just announced a joint research initiative with JPYC and Progmat to introduce Bitcoin, stablecoins, and tokenized assets into Japan’s credit market. The goal is to build a system where businesses can issue digital bonds, investors can settle payments using stablecoins, and Bitcoin can serve as collateral or a foundation for financial products. This is not yet an official product but remains in the research phase; however, it demonstrates Metaplanet’s ambition to become more than just a Bitcoin holding company—they are aiming to build an entire financial ecosystem centered around Bitcoin.

For years, the strategy for digital asset treasury companies was straightforward: accumulate Bitcoin and hold. Now, those same balance sheets are becoming productive capital. Instead of leaving those holdings idle, digital asset treasury companies are borrowing against their Bitcoin to buy back shares or accumulate even more $BTC. That shift is contributing to growing demand for crypto lending. As Bitcoin traded within a narrow range, investors increasingly turned their attention to yield, leading to more inflows into @maplefinance and helping its loans reach an all-time high of $1.9B during the second quarter. The trend extends beyond treasury companies. Maple also received numerous enquiries from Bitcoin miners looking to borrow against their holdings, despite earlier signs that some were pivoting toward AI. These sources of demand helped push Maple to a record $1.9B in new loans over the quarter, led by digital asset treasury companies, alongside Bitcoin miners, prime brokers, and exchanges. $SYRUP 🧡🧡
