In World Cup knockout markets, winning the match and advancing to the next round may not mean the same thing.Most football markets, such as Outcome, Spreads, Totals, Exact Score, and Both Teams to Score, are based on regular time. Regular time means 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
It does not include extra time or penalty shootouts.Team to Advance is different. It is based on which team reaches the next round, including extra time or penalties if needed.This article explains the World Cup market types currently supported in KuCoin Web3 Wallet and what each one means.

What Does Regular Time Mean?

Regular time means:
  • 90 minutes of normal play;
  • Plus stoppage time added by the referee.
Regular time does not include:
  • Extra time;
  • Penalty shootouts.
For World Cup knockout matches, this difference is important because a match can be tied after 90 minutes, then decided later by extra time or penalties.

Outcome

An Outcome market asks for the match result in regular time.
It usually has three possible outcomes:
  • Team A wins;
  • Draw;
  • Team B wins.
Because this market is based on regular time, Draw can still be a valid outcome in knockout matches.
Example:
Team A and Team B are tied after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Team A then wins after penalties.
For the Outcome market:
  • Draw may be the correct outcome.
For Team to Advance:
  • Team A may be the correct outcome.
A team can advance without winning the Outcome market.

Spreads

A Spread market uses a goal handicap.
For example:
  • Team A -1.5
  • Team B +1.5
If you choose Team A -1.5, Team A needs to win by at least 2 goals in regular time for that outcome to win.
If you choose Team B +1.5, Team B may win the spread if Team B wins, draws, or loses by only 1 goal in regular time.
Example:
Team A wins 2–0 after regular time:
  • Team A -1.5 may win;
  • Team B +1.5 may lose.
Team A wins 1–0 after regular time:
  • Team A -1.5 may lose;
  • Team B +1.5 may win.
Spread markets are based on regular time unless the market rules state otherwise.

Totals

A Totals market asks whether the total number of goals will be over or under a specific number.
For example:
  • Over 2.5 goals
  • Under 2.5 goals
If the regular-time score is 2–1, the total is 3 goals.
  • Over 2.5 may win;
  • Under 2.5 may lose.
If the regular-time score is 1–1, the total is 2 goals.
  • Over 2.5 may lose;
  • Under 2.5 may win.
Totals markets are based on regular time unless the market rules state otherwise. Goals scored in extra time or penalty shootouts are not included in regular-time Totals markets.

Exact Score

An Exact Score market asks for the exact score at the end of regular time.
For example:
  • Team A 2–0 Team B
  • Team A 1–1 Team B
  • Team B 1–0 Team A
  • Other
Do not use the final result after extra time or penalties to judge a regular-time Exact Score market.
Example:
Team A and Team B are tied 1–1 after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Team A then wins 2–1 after extra time.
For a regular-time Exact Score market:
  • 1–1 may be the correct score;
  • 2–1 may not be the correct score.
Always check the market rules to confirm how the Exact Score market will be resolved.

Halftime Result

A Halftime Result market asks for the result at halftime.
It is usually based on:
  • The first 45 minutes;
  • Plus first-half stoppage time.
It does not include the second half, extra time, or penalty shootouts.
Example:
Team A leads 1–0 at halftime.
The match ends 2–1 after regular time.
For the Halftime Result market:
  • Team A may be the correct outcome.
The final match result does not change the Halftime Result market.

Both Teams to Score

A Both Teams to Score market asks whether both teams score at least 1 goal in regular time.
The usual outcomes are:
  • Yes
  • No
Example:
The regular-time score is 2–1:
  • Both Teams to Score: Yes may win.
The regular-time score is 2–0:
  • Both Teams to Score: No may win.
Both Teams to Score markets are based on regular time unless the market rules state otherwise. Goals in extra time or penalty shootouts are not included in regular-time Both Teams to Score markets.

Team to Advance

A Team to Advance market asks which team reaches the next round.
This market is different from regular-time markets.
Team to Advance usually includes:
  • Regular time;
  • Extra time;
  • Penalty shootouts, if needed.
It does not matter whether the team wins in 90 minutes, extra time, or penalties. The key question is: which team advances?
Example:
Team A and Team B are tied after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Team A then wins on penalties.
For Team to Advance:
  • Team A may be the correct outcome.
For Outcome:
  • Draw may be the correct outcome.
If your view is “this team reaches the next round,” you are usually looking for Team to Advance, not Outcome.
