Google launched Pics at its annual I/O conference, entering the AI design tools market. The app targets Google Workspace users and specializes in generating images, posters, and marketing materials from text prompts, with support for direct editing.
For a broader user base
Pics is not limited to professional designers. Google says it wants users without design experience, such as teachers and small business owners, to be able to quickly create social media graphics, invitations, and promotional materials.
Highlight editability
Unlike tools that only generate images, Pics adds an editing layer. Users can continue entering prompts, directly select and modify elements in the image, or leave comments—just like in Google Docs—to refine details.
Benchmark against Canva and Anthropic
Google’s entry signifies that AI-driven design is becoming a new competitive frontier. Pics targets both Canva and AI-native products like Anthropic’s Claude Design. Google also stated that Pics is powered by Nano Banana 2 and deeply integrated with Workspace.
