According to U.Today, the German Left Party and Alliance 90/The Greens are proposing to abolish the tax-free holding period for Bitcoin. Under current German law, profits from cryptocurrencies held for more than a year are tax-free, similar to gold and collectibles. The parties argue that this rule is outdated and unfair, as it allows most crypto users to avoid taxes. Isabelle Vandre of the Left Party claims only 3% of Germany's 7 million crypto users pay taxes. The SPD also supports the reform, while the AfD opposes it. The CDU's stance remains unclear.
